What is BFPO:

The British Forces Post Office (BFPO) is an agency that provides a postal service to HM Forces, separate from that provided by Royal Mail in the United Kingdom. BFPO addresses are used for the delivery of mail in the UK and around the world.

The BFPO system is a method of posting items to members of the UK Armed Forces who are stationed or posted overseas, that is to say they are usually based outside the UK mainland.

A BFPO address is written is a certain format that will enable all personnel along the BFPO delivery chain to know exactly where it is heading.

This is how a BFPO address is made up :

Line 1: Service persons Name, Rank and Service Number
Line 2: Sub Unit
Line 3: Unit
Line 4: BFPO Number

So for example if we take a fictitious serviceman (Sgt. J. Bloggs) his BFPO address would be :

12345678, Sgt Bloggs
Play Platoon, Company A
16 The Made Up Battalion
BFPO 987

Please be aware there are strict rules on sizes and weights of packages there are as follows:

Static BFPOs

Due to the nature of the BFPO Agency it is impractical for them to deliver large items to BFPO addresses.
For static BFPO addresses no one side of a package can be more than 1.05 metres long and the sum of the other 2 lengths can be no longer than 2m
If you wish to send a package that has one side measuring 1.05m and one side measuring 0.95m then the remaining side can measure up to 1.05m

Operational Tours and Exercises

The system for calculating maximum sizes destined for these locations is similar to above but advice should be sought before purchasing the items in order to confirm that they will go through the BFPO system. You can get advice directly from the Official British Forces Post Office on 08457 69 79 78

Weight Limits

All packages sent through the standard BFPO postal system have to comply with weight restrictions. They are as follows:
